RSPCA’s Lynne Bradshaw, at the LiveExchange Conference in Townsville

November 3rd, 2013

Here’s another reason why all farmers should be on social media (see previous blog post). To actively counter misinformation, and share quotes. Lynne Bradshaw, National President of the RSPCA, spoke at the LiveExchange conference in Townsville last Friday.  The talk was in the form of an interview by Landline presenter, Pip Courtney. These are some […]

Australian National Park Management and Conservation

October 28th, 2013

Apparently the Queensland LNP are continuing property purchase talks with the owners of 3 cattle stations in far South-West Queensland, for yet more millions. Several questions are immediately obvious: Where is the money coming from to purchase these cattle stations.  Some of it wouldn’t be from taxes paid by remaining cattle station owners, by any […]

Tips for writing a good blog

October 26th, 2013

The internet is buried in blogs. Some are brilliant and some mind-numbingly bad. But most blogs are simply mediocre, with a huge percentage read by very few.  Fortunately most farm blogs don’t fall into this category.  There is strength in a diversity of rural voices – people writing from a wide variety of industries, backgrounds, […]

The truth about Australian animal welfare

June 5th, 2013

There’s a few questions arising from the Weekly Times article re the withdrawal of Animal’s Australia’s ‘Make it possible’ fundraising bags from Coles supermarkets: What does Animals Australia’s Lyn White mean by her threat ‘we’re about to push hard on the accelerator’. More illegally installed surveillance cameras, like the one found at the piggery near Young (NSW), followed […]

“Farmers On Film” Augmented Reality Postcards

March 25th, 2013

Staffordshire University ran a student/farmer grant-funded project prior to the 2012 London Olympics to help consumers find out about who had grown their food and how it was produced.  This ‘Farmers on Film’ project was based on special ‘augmented reality’ postcards produced by the University of Derby (Buxton).  Cambridge University is behind a lot of […]

Steele Rudd – Arthur Hoey Davis

March 13th, 2013

I believe Arthur Hoey Davis (pen name “Steele Rudd”) is by far and away Australia’s best ever writer, due to the originality and relevance of his stories and characters, combined with his great writing ability. Only heard of ‘his’ Dad & Dave jokes?  (Actually written [very badly] by others…much to Steele Rudd’s dismay). Do your […]

#Peasenhallpigs – A tide of change against the noisy minority

March 10th, 2013

Peasenhall Primary School in Suffolk, UK, has developed a scheme to educate students about where their meat comes from by raising pigs.  Fairly predictably, there has been an abusive outcry from vegans/animal rights extremists. Organisers received 400+ derogatory emails, calling them ‘child abusers’, ‘pointless mothers’ etc. Nothing especially unusual about any of the vitriol, unfortunately. […]

Meat Free Monday Propaganda

December 29th, 2012

Do you know who is associated with the latest push to ‘reduce’ Australian meat eating – ‘Do Something’/ Foodwise ‘Meat Free Mondays’?  No?  The funny thing is I doubt the high-profile Australians supporting it really do either. Or if they do know it’s Animals Australia who are driving the campaign, they’re blind to the dark […]

Farmer & grazier advertising industry stereotypes

November 21st, 2012

The Weekly Times newspaper is running a Poll gauging opinion on whether the latest dairy farmer bogan-stereotype Devondale ads should be ditched. Unfortunately over the years farmers of all kinds have been portrayed by the Australian advertising industry as straw-chewing hicksvilleans.  It’s invariably a reflection of the lack of education (on the practical front), intelligence […]
